The Epic Center is a high-rise building located in Wichita, Kansas. At 325 feet (22 stories) above ground level, it is the tallest building in the city of Wichita, and in the entire state of Kansas. However, the tallest structure in Kansas is the KWCH Tower, which was constructed in 1963 in Burrton, Kansas. It is a whopping 1,501 feet! Construction for the Epic Center began in 1987, and it officially opened for business in 1989. The Epic Center helped create a “big city” feel for Wichita, which was helpful because at the time the economy was unstable.
Originally, the plans called for two twin towers to be built, but those plans were pulled and instead they decided on a single tower due to the fear that the occupancy level would never reach capacity. However, the building quickly filled up with tenants, and has since remained successful.
Due to the current downtown development in progress, it has been speculated that other high-rise buildings may soon be under construction in downtown Wichita. In 2005, a rumor surfaced that “Epic II,” the original twin building, was to begin development in the near future. As of January, 2009, no such plans have been brought to my attention.
The Epic Center is still, even 20 years after its construction, the tallest building in the Sunflower State.
